So I'll get straight to the point. The term 'Cyberspace' is term being used more and more these days, as it is a word to describe an environment all connected and communicating through and over computers networks (internet).
What cyberspace offers is the chance for people to connect with almost anyone around the globe. An example of this would be social networking sites in which people can communicate with their friends and family with just there computer and or smart phone. "What kinds of social spaces do people create with networks? Two opposing visions are popular. One highlights the positive effects of networks and their benefits for democracy and prosperity... An alternative view notes that this glowing vision is in part driven by significant investments in public relations, advertising, and political rhetoric..." Seeing "a darker outcome in which individuals are trapped and ensnared in a net that predominantly offers new opportunities for surveillance and social control (Marc A. Smith and Peter Kollock, 1999, p. 4)." This an interesting statement that I find summarises many discussions about cyberspace and the positive and negative affects of a computer connected world.
So, it would be a shame not to talk about cybernetics in relation to cyberspace. Cybernetics, the science of control and communication in animals and machines. The concept itself has been around for quite some time, with many examples of it represented in film and television. The Science-Fiction sub-genre 'Cyberpunk,' a genre revolving worlds strongly influenced by cyberspace/genetics. Most films and shows under this category are different interpretations of what the future would look like with cybernetics are large influence.
Using this definition I have created a timeline starting in 1980 and ending 2016 of Movies/ TV shows (both animated and live action) with the sub-genre of cyberpunk.
